ABOUT

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is increasingly becoming a global health threat and is quickly becoming one of the leading public health threats of the 21st century. Studies show that nearly 1.3 million deaths globally are attributed to AMR every year, and that sub-Saharan Africa has the highest mortality rate in the world.

The Mapping Antimicrobial Resistance and Antimicrobial Use Partnership (MAAP) was launched in 2019 to build capacity for African countries to measure their own AMR and antimicrobial use (AMU) status, the interrelationship between the two, and to monitor progress and identify gaps for continuous improvement.

MAAP has evaluated large quantities of data in Africa and lays out gaps in data collection and laboratory capabilities. It provides stark insights on the under-reported depth of the AMR crisis across Africa and lays out urgent policy recommendations to address the emergency.

The project is a collaboration of several organizations, namely the African Union, the Africa CDC, the African Society for Laboratory Medicine, Innovative Support to Emergencies, Diseases and Disasters (InSTEDD), IQVIA, One Health Trust, the East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA), and the West African Health Organisation (WAHO), with financial support from the Fleming Fund and UKAID.
