Robert Lustig, Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics, Division of Endocrinology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF)

Depression in teens has never been more prevalent or more severe. It threatens our children's and our society's future. The only way to treat or prevent it is to know what is causing it. Research shows everything from the stress of cellphones to ultra-processed foods to environmental chemicals all play a role; each of these lead to reductions in brain energy production or increases in brain energy utilization, all of which lead to both defects in emotional regulation (e.g., depression) and defects in cognitive function (e.g., dementia). So many insults to our environment have driven this brain energy epidemic. Sapien Labs is to be commended on helping to sort these different stimuli and showing that these are primary drivers. Now the goal is to take this information and apply it to the current crisis to reverse our brain energy decline and mitigate our mental health crises.
