What do we share beneath our differences?

Conversations in Photography is a national storytelling project that brings together people from across the United States to explore what they care about most in their communities—and what they hope for the future.

Through photography and guided conversation, participants reflect on what is in their community and what could be, discovering unexpected connections with someone from a very different place who shares their city’s name.

This project is supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and led by artist, photographer and curator Annie Levy.

What You’ll Do

The project will take place in February-March (pending participants’ availability), virtually over Zoom. Selected participants will:

  • Take photos that capture your community—its challenges, strengths, and possibilities (no photography experience required!)

  • Be matched with a “twin city” partner—someone from another U.S. city with the same name as yours (e.g., Juneau, AK / Juneau, WI)

  • Join four virtual conversations (about 4–5 total hours) with your "twin city" partner

  • See your story featured as part of a national creative project at its conclusion that reveals what’s possible when people come together with openness, and a willingness to see beyond the labels.

You don’t need any photography, storytelling or advocacy experience—just curiosity, imagination, and a willingness to reflect and connect.

Compensation

$750 honorarium upon completion of the project
